In Lydia - a region of ancient Greece - lived a young woman named Arachne.

Arachne wasn't noble! She wasn't rich! Her father was a simple dyer who colored wool!

But Arachne had an extraordinary talent: she was the best weaver in the world.

Her hands danced over the loom! The threads obeyed like magic!

She created tapestries so beautiful that people came from distant cities just to see.

"Look!" they said in wonder! "The flowers look real! The birds look like they'll fly away!"

"Arachne has a divine gift!"

Arachne knew she was talented.

At first, she was humble! She accepted compliments with modesty!

But gradually... pride grew.

"I'm the best weaver in Greece!" she began to say!

"Nobody weaves like me!"

People agreed! "It's true! You're wonderful!"

"You must have learned from the goddess Athena!" they said! "She's the goddess of weaving! She must have taught you!"

This irritated Arachne.

"ATHENA?!" she said with disdain! "I learned NOTHING from Athena!"

"My talent is MINE! I'm better than Athena!"

One day, while Arachne was weaving surrounded by admirers, an old woman entered.

She was a wrinkled lady, bent over, leaning on a staff.

"Young one," said the old woman with a trembling voice, "I heard you say you're better than Athena!"

"It's true!" said Arachne! "I am!"

"Be careful, child!" warned the old woman! "Be proud of your mortal talent! But never compare yourself to the gods!"

"Athena is a GODDESS! Ask for forgiveness before it's too late!"

Arachne laughed with contempt! "Forgiveness? Why? I'm telling the truth!"

"If Athena disagrees, let her come down from Olympus and prove she's better!"

"I challenge Athena to a weaving duel!"

At that moment, the old woman transformed.

The wrinkled body became tall and strong.

The ragged clothes turned into a shining white tunic.

The staff became a golden spear.

It was ATHENA - the goddess herself.

Everyone fell to their knees! "The goddess! The goddess!"

But Arachne, even shocked, did not kneel.

"Finally!" said Arachne, trying to hide her fear! "You came to accept my challenge?"

Athena looked at her with eyes cold as marble.

"I gave you a chance to take it back! You refused!"

"Very well! I accept your challenge! Let us weave!"

Two looms were set up side by side.

Athena on one side! Arachne on the other!

A crowd gathered to see the impossible duel.

"A mortal against a goddess!" they whispered! "Arachne will lose!"

But others said: "Have you seen Arachne weave? She's incredible! Maybe she has a chance!"

Athena and Arachne picked up their threads.

"Begin!" someone shouted!

And their hands began to fly.

Athena wove with divine perfection.

Her fingers could barely be seen they were so fast.

Colors appeared! Shapes formed! Images came to life!

Arachne wove with mortal perfection.

Her hands danced! The loom sang! The tapestry grew!

Hours passed.

No one in the crowd dared to speak! They just watched hypnotized!

Both women wove without stopping! Without eating! Without resting!

Until finally... they finished at the same time.

Athena stepped back from her tapestry.

It was Magnificent.

It showed Mount Olympus in all its glory.

Zeus on the throne! Poseidon with his trident! Apollo with his lyre!

All the gods in majesty and power.

In the corners, Athena had woven scenes of mortals who challenged gods - and their terrible punishments.

"A warning," thought the crowd!

The technique was perfect! The colors were vivid! It looked like the gods would step out of the tapestry!

"Divine work!" everyone agreed!

Then they looked at Arachne's tapestry.

And they were... shocked.

Because it was AS Perfect AS Athena's.

Technically Impeccable! The colors! The texture! The realism!

Even Athena, for a moment, was impressed.

But then she saw the content...

And her face turned Pale With Rage.

Because Arachne had woven the Flaws OF THE Gods.

She showed Zeus transforming into a bull to kidnap Europa.

Zeus turning into a swan to deceive Leda.

Poseidon transforming into a horse.

All the tricks and errors of the gods.

"You DARE!" thundered Athena!

"Not only do you boast of being better than me!"

"But you RIDICULE the gods in your work!"

"You show our weaknesses! You mock our power!"

Arachne, even trembling, raised her chin.

"You asked for a duel! I gave my best work!"

"Are you angry because my tapestry is as good as yours?"

"Perhaps better?"

She went too far.

Athena grabbed her loom shuttle.

Slash! Slash! Slash!

She tore Arachne's tapestry to pieces.

"NOOO!" screamed Arachne! "My work!"

Athena touched Arachne's forehead with one finger.

"You want to weave forever? YOU WILL WEAVE!"

"You and your descendants will weave until the end of time!"

Transformation began.

Arachne's body shrank! It became small! Black!

Her arms multiplied! Two! Four! Six! Eight legs!

Her body became round! Small as a nut!

Hair covered her skin.

Her hands became delicate legs.

Arachne tried to scream! But she had no voice!

From her abdomen, a silk thread emerged.

She had become a Spider.

The first spider in the world.

"Weave!" ordered Athena! "Weave your web! As you wished!"

The small spider, who still had Arachne's mind, obeyed.

Instinctively, she began to weave a web.

Thread by thread! Delicate! Perfect! Geometric!

A miniature masterpiece.

"Your talent remains," said Athena, a bit calmer!

"You will weave forever! And all your descendants - all spiders - will weave too!"

"But you'll always be small! Always feared! Always hiding in corners!"

"To remember that mortals must not challenge gods!"

Athena disappeared.

The crowd looked horrified at the small spider.

"Arachne..." they whispered! "Poor Arachne!"

"Pride!" said others! "See? She challenged a goddess!"

The small spider ran to a dark corner.

And continued to weave.

Because she couldn't stop.

It was her nature now.

And since that day, all the spiders in the world are descendants of Arachne.

That's why they're called arachnids - from Arachne.

That's why they weave such perfect webs! So geometric! So beautiful!

It's Arachne's talent that continues.

When you see a spider web - especially those perfect round webs at dawn, covered with dew - remember.

It's Arachne still weaving.

Still showing her skill.

But now small and hidden.

Punished forever for her pride.
