Jesus had spent the whole day teaching a crowd of people by the Sea of Galilee. He was very tired.

When evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us go across to the other side."

The disciples sent away the crowd and took Jesus in the boat, just as he was. There were also other boats with them.

Jesus was so tired that he went to the stern of the boat, lay down on a cushion, and fell asleep.

The disciples rowed calmly. Many of them were experienced fishermen - Peter, Andrew, James, and John knew that sea well. They had spent their whole lives fishing there.

The boat glided smoothly over the water. Everything was calm. Everything was peaceful.

But suddenly, things changed!

A great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.

The wind began to blow hard! The waves grew big, bigger and bigger! They beat against the boat violently, throwing water inside!

SPLASH! SPLASH! SPLASH! Huge waves covered the boat!

The disciples tried to control the boat. They pulled the sails, rowed hard, bailed out the water coming in.

But the storm was too strong! The wind howled! The boat tossed up and down in the giant waves! Water came in from all sides!

Even the experienced fishermen were afraid. They knew that sea, but they had never seen such a terrible storm!

The boat was filling with water. It was sinking!

The disciples were terrified. They thought they were going to die!

The boat was already filling with water.

And where was Jesus during all this?

Jesus was still sleeping! There in the stern of the boat, on the cushion, Jesus slept peacefully!

Huge waves beating against the boat - Jesus sleeping.

Wind howling - Jesus sleeping.

Water filling the boat - Jesus sleeping.

Disciples shouting in fear - Jesus sleeping!

How could He sleep in the midst of such a terrible storm?

Jesus had no fear because He trusted in God the Father. He knew He was safe, no matter what happened.

Finally, the disciples went to Jesus and woke Him, shouting:

"Teacher! Teacher! Do you not care that we are perishing?"

They were desperate! They thought they were going to sink and die!

Jesus woke up. He looked around and saw the furious storm, the strong wind, the giant waves, the terrified disciples.

Then Jesus stood up. And He did something amazing!

Jesus rebuked the wind. He said to the wind and the sea:

Peace! Be still!

SILENCE!

Immediately, the wind stopped blowing!

The giant waves became calm!

The sea became completely smooth, like a mirror!

And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

It was instantaneous! From a terrible storm to perfect calm - in a second!

A moment before, there were huge waves and howling wind. Now, everything was quiet and peaceful!

Jesus had spoken, and nature obeyed! The wind and sea did what Jesus commanded!

Then Jesus turned to the disciples and said:

Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?

Jesus was gently rebuking the disciples. They were with Him in the boat! The Son of God was there! Why were they so afraid?

The disciples should have trusted that Jesus would take care of them. Even if Jesus was sleeping, He had power to save them!

But the disciples were still learning to trust in Jesus.

The disciples were filled with great fear and amazement. They said to one another:

Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

They were amazed! Awed in a good way!

They had seen Jesus heal the sick. They had seen Jesus teach with wisdom. But now they saw Jesus control nature itself!

The wind obeyed Jesus!

The sea obeyed Jesus!

Only God has power over nature! Only God created the wind and sea!

And Jesus showed that He has that power too. Jesus is God!

What do we learn from this story?

First, we learn that Jesus has power over everything - even over nature! He created the wind and sea, so they obey Him.

Second, we learn that Jesus takes care of us. Even when it seems He is "sleeping" or not paying attention, He is in control. He never abandons us.

Third, we learn to have faith even when we are afraid. Sometimes, storms appear in our lives - problems, difficulties, things that frighten us. But Jesus is with us in the boat! We can trust in Him!

Fourth, we learn that one word from Jesus is enough. He didn't need to fight against the storm. He just said "Be still!" and everything became calm. Jesus' power is like that - complete and perfect!

The disciples asked, "Who is this?" And we know the answer: He is Jesus, the Son of God, the Lord of all things!
