After the 18 apparitions, Bernadette's life changed completely!
She was famous! Everyone wanted to see her! Talk to her! Touch her!
"Tell us about Our Lady!" they constantly asked!
But Bernadette didn't like attention!
She wanted to live quietly! In peace! Just with God!
But it wasn't easy...
The Interrogation by Authorities
Civil and religious authorities interrogated Bernadette repeatedly!
"You made up this story!" some accused.
"You're lying to make money!" others said.
But Bernadette remained calm! Patient! She told the same story always!
She never contradicted herself! Never changed details!
She simply said: "I don't ask you to believe! I just tell what I saw!"
Doctors examined her! They wanted to prove she was mentally ill!
But they found a normal girl! Healthy mentally! Just very poor and physically sick!
They offered her money to admit she lied! She refused!
They threatened her with prison! She didn't waver!
Bernadette had an extraordinary virtue: simplicity in truth!
She didn't exaggerate! She didn't invent! She just said what she saw!
Education
Bernadette still couldn't read or write!
So the Sisters of Charity took her in and educated her!
At 14, Bernadette began learning the alphabet!
It was difficult! Her health was weak! Her mind had no habit of studying!
But she persevered! She learned to read! To write! To do arithmetic!
More importantly: she learned catechism deeply!
And she continued praying much! The rosary was her treasure!
The Religious Vocation
From childhood, Bernadette felt a desire to be a nun!
But she doubted: "Will I be worthy? Will I be accepted?"
In 1864, at 20 years old, she asked to enter the congregation!
But the Mother Superior hesitated!
"You're too famous! You'll cause distraction! And your health is terrible!"
Bernadette responded humbly: "I understand! I'll pray to know God's will!"
Finally, in 1866, she was accepted!
Farewell to Lourdes
In July 1866, Bernadette left Lourdes!
She went to the convent in Nevers (a distant city in northern France)!
Before leaving, she visited the grotto for the last time!
She knelt! She cried! She prayed!
"Goodbye, my dear grotto! Goodbye, my Mother of Heaven!"
She would never return to Lourdes!
She would spend the rest of her life far from the place of the apparitions!
Life in the Convent
At the convent in Nevers, Bernadette received her religious name: Sister Marie-Bernard!
She expected a tranquil life of prayer!
But it wasn't like that...
The Mother Superior, Marie Thérèse Vauzou, was very harsh with Bernadette!
She treated her coldly! Never praised her! Always criticized her!
Why? To kill pride! To keep Bernadette humble!
Others asked Bernadette: "Tell us about the apparitions!"
But the Mother would say: "Bernadette, you're good for nothing!"
"What are you good at?" she would ask in front of everyone.
Bernadette responded humbly: "Nothing, Mother!"
"Exactly! You only know how to be sick! That's your occupation!"
Bernadette accepted everything with patience! Without complaining! Without defending herself!
Terrible Illnesses
Bernadette had always been sick! But in the convent, she got much worse!
She had asthma that suffocated her constantly!
She developed tuberculosis of the bone - a terrible disease that corroded her bones!
She suffered excruciating pain in her knee! In her hip! In her back!
She spent years in the infirmary! Unable to work!
Sometimes she screamed in pain! Other times, she fainted!
But even suffering, Bernadette didn't complain!
When asked: "How are you?" she responded: "Always well!"
"Are you suffering much?" "No more than Jesus on the Cross!"
She offered everything to God! For sinners! For the conversion of the world!
Once she said: "My occupation is being sick!"
But she sanctified suffering! She transformed pain into prayer!
April 16, 1879: Death
In April 1879, Bernadette was dying!
She was only 35 years old! But her body was destroyed!
On the afternoon of April 16 (Easter Wednesday!), she asked for holy water!
She made the sign of the cross! She kissed the crucifix!
She said: "My Jesus, I love you!"
And at 3:15 PM (the hour of Christ's death!), Bernadette died peacefully!
The sisters present saw something extraordinary:
Bernadette's face, previously marked by pain, became radiant!
She looked young again! Beautiful! At peace!
It was as if she saw something glorious!
Everyone testified: "She saw something heavenly before dying!"
The Incorrupt Body
Bernadette was buried in the convent cemetery!
But in 1909, 30 years later, they exhumed the body!
Why? For the beatification process!
When they opened the coffin... they were shocked!
Bernadette's body was intact! Without decomposition!
The skin was white! The eyes closed! As if she were sleeping!
Doctors examined it thoroughly!
There was no embalming! No tricks!
It was a miracle! Supernatural preservation!
They exhumed it two more times (1919 and 1925) - always intact!
Today, Bernadette's body is in a glass reliquary in the convent chapel!
Thousands visit annually! They see with their own eyes!
June 14, 1925: Beatification
In 1925, Pope Pius XI beatified Bernadette!
It was an enormous celebration! Pilgrims from all over the world came to Rome!
Blessed Bernadette Soubirous!
The poor girl from Lourdes was now officially recognized as blessed!
December 8, 1933: Canonization
On December 8, 1933 (feast of the Immaculate Conception!), Pope Pius XI canonized Bernadette!
Saint Bernadette of Lourdes!
St. Peter's Basilica was packed! 50,000 people!
The Pope declared: "Saint Bernadette Soubirous is a model of purity, humility and obedience!"
Lourdes celebrated! All of France celebrated! The Catholic world celebrated!
Lourdes Today
Today, Lourdes is one of the world's largest shrines!
About 6 million pilgrims visit annually!
The spring Bernadette discovered flows constantly!
Thousands of miraculous cures have been officially recognized!
The blind see! The paralyzed walk! Cancer disappears!
But the greatest miracles are spiritual: sinners convert! Souls find peace!

Saint Bernadette and You
Saint Bernadette was your age when she saw Our Lady!
She wasn't special! She was poor! Sick! Without education!
But God chose her! Why? Because she had a pure heart!
You don't need to be rich! You don't need to be perfect!
You just need to have a heart open to God!
Saint Bernadette calls us: "Don't just see the grotto! See what the grotto teaches!"
The grotto teaches: God uses the little ones! Mary loves the humble! Suffering has value! Prayer transforms!
