The chicken coop was overcrowded! 70 people in a tiny space!
Sister Dulce knew: they needed to grow! But how? She had no money!
She did what she always did: she prayed and trusted in God!
And miraculously, things began to happen...
Building the Shelter
In 1949, with donations that began arriving, Sister Dulce built the first real building!
It was small, simple, but it was a start!
They called it Santo Antonio Shelter - in honor of Saint Anthony, the saint of the poor!
Now they could shelter more people! They had an infirmary, kitchen, bathrooms!
Sister Dulce worked day and night! She cared for the sick, managed everything, begged for donations, cleaned, cooked!
"Sister Dulce, you're going to kill yourself from so much work!" they would say.
She would answer smiling: "I'll die doing what Jesus asks! What a beautiful death!"
The Hospital Grows
But the Shelter also became too small! More and more sick people arrived!
Sister Dulce continued begging, building, expanding!
In the 1950s, the Shelter became a Hospital!
They built new pavilions! They got medical equipment! They hired doctors and nurses!
But Sister Dulce had an absolute rule: no one would be refused for lack of money!
Rich or poor, white or black, Catholic or not - all were welcome!
Jesus didn't choose! She wouldn't choose either!
The Social Works Grow
But Sister Dulce didn't stop at the hospital!
She saw that people needed more! So she founded:
School for poor children - so they could learn to read and write!
Daycare - for working mothers to leave their children!
Orphanage - for abandoned children!
Nursing home - for elderly without family!
Vocational courses - for young people to learn trades!
All free! All with love! All for God's glory!
Recognition Begins
Sister Dulce's fame spread throughout Brazil!
Newspapers wrote about her! Radio and TV interviewed her!
Politicians came to visit her! Businessmen donated money!
But Sister Dulce remained the same: humble, simple, dedicated!
She wore the same old mended habit! She ate little! She slept even less!
All the money that arrived went to the poor! She kept nothing for herself!
The Meeting with the Pope
In 1980, something extraordinary happened: Sister Dulce went to Rome and met Pope John Paul II!
She was 66 years old and already sick, but she made the trip!
The Pope received her warmly! He knew her work!
He blessed her and said: "Continue, Sister Dulce! The world needs people like you!"
Sister Dulce cried with emotion! Receiving the Pope's blessing was a dream come true!
She returned to Brazil even more animated! "The Pope blessed me! I have to work more!"
Awards and Recognition
Sister Dulce received several important awards:
In 1988, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize!
She received the title of "Woman of the Americas" from the Pan American Union!
She was decorated by the Brazilian government!
Universities gave her honorary degrees!
But Sister Dulce didn't care about awards! She said: "Awards are good because they draw attention to the work! That way more people help!"
She used fame to get more donations for her poor!
Sister Dulce's Illness
For decades, Sister Dulce worked without stopping!
She slept 2-3 hours per night! She ate poorly! She carried weight! She climbed stairs!
Gradually, her body began to cry out!
She developed serious respiratory problems! She had repeated pneumonia!
She became increasingly weak! She needed oxygen!
But even sick, she continued working! "As long as I breathe, I will serve!"
In her final years, Sister Dulce became very weak!
She had to use a wheelchair! She constantly depended on oxygen!
But she continued giving orders, administering, planning!
From her bed, she continued caring for her "army of love"!
Doctors said: "It's a miracle she's alive! Anyone else would have died already!"
But Sister Dulce had a mission to fulfill! And she wouldn't give up!
March 13, 1992: The Farewell
In the early morning of March 13, 1992, Sister Dulce was very ill.
She was 77 years old. She was surrounded by her religious sisters.
At 6:45 AM, Sister Dulce died peacefully.
Her last words were: "Be happy! Always be happy!"
The news spread quickly! Salvador stopped!
Thousands came to say goodbye! They formed huge lines!
They cried and thanked: "Thank you, Sister Dulce! You saved my life!" "You cared for my mother!" "You fed my children!"
The Funeral
Sister Dulce's funeral was extraordinary!
More than 100,000 people went to the cemetery!
It was the largest funeral in Bahia's history!
Politicians, businessmen, but mainly the poor - thousands of poor people!
They cried: "We lost our mother!" "Who will take care of us now?"
But Sister Dulce's work didn't die with her! The Social Works continued!
Today, the Sister Dulce Social Works (OSID) serve more than 3,500 people per day!
The Canonization Process
Shortly after her death, the beatification process began!
The Archdiocese of Salvador gathered testimonies! Investigated miracles! Studied her life!
In 2000, Pope John Paul II declared Sister Dulce Venerable!
In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI beatified her! Now she was Blessed Dulce of the Poor!
And finally, on October 13, 2019, Pope Francis canonized her!
Saint Dulce of the Poor - Brazil's first saint!
The Miracles
To be a saint, the Church needs to recognize miracles!
The first recognized miracle: José Maurício Moreira, a blind man who recovered his sight after praying to Sister Dulce!
He had been completely blind for years! Doctors said it was impossible to cure!
But he prayed fervently to Sister Dulce! And suddenly, he could see again!
It was rigorously investigated! Doctors confirmed: there's no scientific explanation!
This miracle was accepted for beatification!
For canonization, another miracle was recognized: the cure of a man with a brain tumor!
Devotion Today
Today, Saint Dulce is beloved throughout Brazil and the world!
Thousands visit her tomb at the Sister Dulce Sanctuary in Salvador!
They ask for her intercession! They thank for graces received!
Churches are dedicated to her! Children receive her name!
The Sister Dulce Social Works continue her work:
- Santo Antonio Hospital (one of the largest in Bahia!)
- School for more than 1,000 children
- Daycare for 200 babies
- Nursing home for 80 elderly
- Professional Education Center
- And much more!
