Long ago, in the city of Myra (in present-day Turkey), there lived a bishop named Nicholas.

Nicholas wasn't an ordinary bishop! He loved helping the poor - especially in secret!

He didn't want fame or thanks! He just wanted to do good as Jesus taught!

And this is his most famous story...

The Poor Family

In the same city of Myra, there lived a man who had three beautiful daughters.

Before, he had been rich! He had a big house, good food, nice clothes!

But he lost all his money! He became poor, very poor!

Now he lived in a small house and had almost nothing to eat.

The three daughters were beautiful and good, but they were sad.

Why? Let's understand...

The Problem

In those days, for a young woman to marry, she needed a dowry.

What's a dowry? It was money or valuables that the bride's family gave to the groom!

Without a dowry, no man wanted to marry!

And the father of the three young women had no money at all! Zero! Nothing!

The daughters couldn't marry! They would be alone forever!

Worse still: without money, they might have to work at very bad things to survive!

The father cried: "I can't take care of my daughters! What will become of them?"

Nicholas Discovers

One day, Bishop Nicholas was walking through the city.

He visited the poor, asked how they were, helped whoever needed it.

Someone told him about the man with three daughters!

"Bishop, there's a very poor man who has no dowry for his daughters! He's desperate!"

Nicholas's heart felt heavy! "I must help!"

But Nicholas didn't want anyone to know! He always helped in secret!

So he had an idea...

The First Night

That night, when everything was dark and everyone was sleeping...

Nicholas left his house wearing a dark cloak!

He carried a heavy bag! What was inside? Gold!

He walked silently to the poor man's house.

The window was open (because it was hot)!

Nicholas grabbed the bag of gold and... PLOP! He threw it through the window!

The bag fell right inside the house! It made noise!

The father woke up with the noise! "What was that?"

He lit a candle and saw: a bag of gold!

"What?! Gold?! Where did this come from?"

He ran to the window, but saw no one! Nicholas had already fled!

The man cried with joy! "It's a miracle! God heard my prayers!"

Now he had a dowry for his eldest daughter to marry!

And soon, the eldest daughter found a good young man and got married!

The Second Night

A few months later, the second daughter also needed to marry!

But the money had run out! There was no more dowry!

The father was worried again!

But Nicholas was paying attention! He knew the family still needed help!

So, on a dark night, he went out again with his cloak and another bag of gold!

He walked silently to the house...

And PLOP! He threw the second bag through the window!

The father woke up again! "Again?! Another bag of gold!"

He ran to the window, but saw no one! Nicholas was fast!

The man cried with emotion! "God is taking care of me! But who is this angel?"

With this money, the second daughter was also able to marry!

Now only the youngest daughter remained...

The Third Night

Some time passed, and the youngest daughter also needed a dowry!

The father thought: "Will the mysterious benefactor appear again?"

He decided: "I'm going to find out who it is! I'll stay awake all night!"

And that's what he did! He hid near the window, waiting...

Meanwhile, Nicholas prepared the third bag of gold!

He walked silently to the house as on the other times...

But this time, the father was watching!

Nicholas approached and threw the third bag through the window!

But the father was prepared! He ran outside quickly!

He caught Nicholas before he could escape!

"Wait! Wait! Who are you?"

Nicholas tried to hide his face with his cloak, but the father recognized:

"Bishop Nicholas?! Is it you?!"

Nicholas was discovered!

The Secret Revealed

The man fell to his knees: "Thank you! Thank you! You saved my family!"

He cried with gratitude! "How can I repay you?"

But Nicholas said: "Please, don't tell anyone! I only did what Jesus would ask!"

"But Bishop, you saved us! I need to thank you!"

Nicholas responded kindly: "If you want to thank me, help other people when you can! Pass the kindness forward!"

The man promised: "I won't tell anyone... while you're alive!"

Happy Ending

The third daughter also got married!

All three sisters had happy families!

And they always told their children: "A saint named Nicholas saved us!"

Bishop Nicholas continued helping the poor for the rest of his life!

Always in secret! Always with love! Always as Jesus taught!

He became one of the world's most beloved saints!

Why Did Saint Nicholas Become Santa Claus?

This story spread throughout Europe!

People began imitating Saint Nicholas: they gave secret gifts to the poor!

On Saint Nicholas's night (December 6), parents put hidden gifts for their children!

They said: "It was Saint Nicholas who brought it!"

Over time, this tradition transformed!

Saint Nicholas in Dutch is "Sinterklaas"... which became "Santa Claus"!

Santa's red clothes? They're the bishop's vestments that Saint Nicholas wore!

Saint Nicholas Today

Saint Nicholas lived more than 1,700 years ago!

But he's still one of the world's most beloved saints!

In Greece, Russia, Italy, and many countries, people celebrate his day (December 6)!

Children put their shoes by the window and wait for gifts from Saint Nicholas!

Churches are dedicated to him! Cities bear his name!

He's the patron saint of sailors, children, and especially the poor!

"When you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you!" (Matthew 6:3-4)

Reflection

Saint Nicholas teaches us something beautiful: giving without expecting anything in return! He didn't want fame! He didn't want thanks! He didn't want people to know! He just wanted to help because he loved Jesus and loved people! How different from our world today, where many only do good if someone is watching! Saint Nicholas gave secretly, at night, when no one saw - except God! And you? Can you do good even when no one will know? Can you help someone secretly? That's the true spirit of Saint Nicholas! Don't wait for Christmas - be a little Saint Nicholas today! Help someone in secret! Do a good deed that only God will see! As Saint Nicholas threw bags of gold, you can throw "bags of love" - a kind word, a smile, a helping hand - without expecting anything in return!
