In the year 385, in a village in Roman Britain (today's England), a boy was born named Maewyn Succat!

(Later, he would be known as Patrick!)

His family was Christian! His grandfather was a priest! His father, a deacon!

But young Maewyn didn't take faith seriously!

"I'm Christian in name only!" he thought. "I don't need God!"

He lived carefree! He played! He studied! He had a good life!

He didn't imagine what God was preparing for him...

The Kidnapping

When Patrick was 16 years old, something terrible happened!

Irish pirates attacked his village!

They plundered! Burned! Captured people!

Patrick was kidnapped! Dragged to a ship!

Taken to Ireland as a slave!

Far from home! Far from family! Alone!

Slave in Ireland

In Ireland, Patrick was sold to a druid farmer!

(Druids were Celtic pagan priests)

Patrick was forced to tend sheep!

In the mountains! In the cold! In the rain! In the wind!

Alone! Hungry! Cold!

Without family! Without friends! Without hope!

It was a hard life! Terrible! Desperate!

But something extraordinary happened!

In the loneliness of the mountains, Patrick remembered God!

"When I was free, I despised God!"

"Now that I'm a slave, I need Him!"

Patrick began to pray!

He prayed upon waking! While working! While sleeping!

He prayed in the cold! In the rain! In suffering!

He himself wrote later: "I prayed 100 times a day and almost 100 times at night!"

The Voice of God

After 6 years of slavery, Patrick heard a voice in a dream!

"Patrick! You're going home!"

"Walk 200 miles to the sea! There's a ship waiting!"

Patrick woke up! He knew it was God speaking!

He decided: "I'll escape! I'll trust in God!"

The Miraculous Escape

Patrick escaped!

He walked 200 miles (more than 300 kilometers)!

Through forests! Mountains! Rivers!

Without maps! Without compass! Without provisions!

But God guided him!

Finally he reached the sea!

And there, exactly as God had said, was a ship!

Patrick asked the sailors: "Take me with you!"

They refused: "No! Go away!"

Patrick prayed! And the miracle happened!

One of the sailors shouted: "Come! You can come with us!"

Patrick boarded!

God had provided! Exactly as He had promised!

The Return and Formation

After many adventures, Patrick returned home!

His family received him with tears of joy!

"You're alive! We thought you were dead!"

Patrick embraced his parents! He was home! Safe!

He would never be a slave again!

He could have a quiet life!

But God had other plans...

One night, Patrick had another dream!

He saw a man coming from Ireland!

The man carried many letters!

One said: "The Voice of the Irish"!

And Patrick heard voices: "Please, holy young man, come and walk among us again!"

It was the Irish! Asking him to return!

Patrick woke up crying!

"God wants me to return to Ireland!"

"To evangelize the people who enslaved me!"

The Preparation

Patrick decided to obey God!

But he knew: he needed to prepare!

He went to Gaul (today's France)!

He studied with Saint Germanus of Auxerre!

He learned theology! Studied the Bible! Deepened his faith!

He was ordained a deacon! Then a priest!

Finally, he was consecrated a bishop!

It took 15 years preparing!

432 A.D.: Return to Ireland

In 432, Patrick was 47 years old!

Pope Celestine I sent him as missionary bishop to Ireland!

Patrick returned! To the land of his captivity!

To those who had enslaved him!

But now he returned not with anger - with love!

Not with vengeance - with the Gospel!

To free the Irish - not from physical slavery, but from sin!

The Evangelization of Ireland

Patrick traveled throughout all of Ireland!

He preached everywhere! To everyone! Kings and slaves!

He confronted druids! He faced persecutions!

He was imprisoned 12 times! But always miraculously freed!

He baptized thousands! He ordained priests!

He founded churches! He established monasteries!

The Shamrock and the Holy Trinity

Patrick used a brilliant method to teach!

The Holy Trinity is difficult to explain!

How can God be One and at the same time Three Persons?

Patrick picked a three-leaf clover (shamrock)!

"Look! Three leaves! But one clover!"

"So is God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit - three Persons, one God!"

The people understood! It was simple! It was visual!

The Snakes of Ireland

There's a famous legend about Saint Patrick!

They say he drove all the snakes from Ireland!

He would have beaten a drum! And all the snakes fled to the sea!

To this day there are no venomous snakes in Ireland!

But is it literally true?

Probably not! Studies show there were never snakes in Ireland!

(The island separated from the continent before snakes arrived there!)

So what does the legend mean?

The snakes represent paganism!

The druids! Idolatry! The worship of false gods!

Patrick "drove out the snakes" = converted Ireland to Christianity!

He freed the people from the spiritual poison of paganism!

It's a symbolic story! But with profound truth!

Patrick really freed Ireland - from sin!

Mount Croagh Patrick

Patrick climbed a mountain called Croagh Patrick!

There, he fasted for 40 days and 40 nights! (Like Jesus in the desert!)

He prayed for the conversion of Ireland!

He fought demons that attacked him!

He rang a bell! And all the snakes (symbols of evil) fled!

It was a tremendous spiritual battle!

But Patrick won! Through prayer! Through fasting! Through faith!

The Easter Fire

One Easter, King Laoghaire made a law:

"No one may light a fire before I light the sacred druid fire!"

But Patrick, that night, lit a huge Easter bonfire!

On top of a hill! Visible to all!

The king was furious! "Who dares challenge me?"

He summoned Patrick to his palace!

The druids tried to extinguish Patrick's fire!

But they couldn't! The fire wouldn't go out!

They tried to perform false miracles! But they failed!

One druid tried to fly! But he fell and died!

Patrick prayed! And the king saw God's power!

The king didn't fully convert, but he allowed Patrick to preach freely!

Many at court converted!

Years of Fruitfulness

Patrick worked in Ireland for almost 30 years!

He baptized thousands! Perhaps 100,000 people!

He ordained more than 1,000 priests!

He consecrated many bishops!

He founded 300 churches!

He established monasteries that became centers of learning!

Ireland was transformed! From pagan land to "Island of Saints"!

Death and Legacy

On March 17, 461 (or 493, there's doubt), Patrick died!

He was about 76 years old!

He spent his last days in Saul, where he had built his first church!

He died in peace! Surrounded by disciples!

He was buried in Downpatrick!

All of Ireland mourned! "The spiritual father of the nation has died!"

Christian Ireland

Thanks to Saint Patrick, Ireland became deeply Christian!

In the following centuries, Ireland produced countless saints!

Irish monasteries preserved knowledge during the barbarian invasions!

Irish monks evangelized Europe!

Ireland was called "Island of Saints and Scholars"!

All because of Saint Patrick's work!

Saint Patrick's Day

Today, March 17 is Saint Patrick's Day!

Celebrated in Ireland! And around the world!

There are parades! Parties! People wear green!

They wear shamrocks! They celebrate Irish culture!

But most important: they celebrate a saint!

A man who loved his enemies!

Who returned to evangelize those who enslaved him!

Who transformed a nation through the power of the Gospel!

Saint Patrick's Prayer

Patrick wrote a beautiful prayer called the "Lorica" (Breastplate of Saint Patrick):

"Christ with me, Christ before me,

Christ behind me, Christ within me,

Christ beneath me, Christ above me,

Christ on my right, Christ on my left,

Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit,

Christ when I rise!"

What a powerful prayer! Putting Christ in everything!

Patron of Ireland

Saint Patrick is Patron of Ireland!

He's also patron of:

- Engineers (he built many churches!)

- People afraid of snakes!

- People who've been rejected!

- Missionaries!

His feast day is March 17!
