Night came to Bethlehem. The lamp in the stable was small. There was hay on the floor. There was hay in the manger. In the hay of the manger, the baby Jesus lay asleep.
Mary watched the baby. Joseph watched the baby. Close by stood the ox, breathing slow. Huff. Huff. He was big and he was warm. The ox looked at the baby. And he went quiet.
The donkey stood on the other side. His ears were long and soft. The donkey looked at the baby. And he went quiet.
The shepherds brought their sheep inside. One sheep said baa. Very small. The sheep looked at the baby. And they went quiet.
After that, nobody said a word. Only the hay made a little sound. Hush. Only the ox breathed warm. Huff. Huff. The baby Jesus slept in the middle of them all.
The whole stable went quiet. Good night, ox. Good night, donkey. Good night, sheep. Good night, baby Jesus. Close your eyes now too. The night is soft and the hay is warm. Good night, little one.
