Lucia dos Santos was the oldest of the three shepherd children - she was 10 years old during the 1917 apparitions.
She was the one who spoke with Our Lady. She was the one who asked questions. She was the one who led Francisco and Jacinta.
But unlike her cousins who died young, Lucia lived a long life - 97 years!
Why? Because God had a special mission for her: to spread the message of Fatima throughout the entire world!
And what an extraordinary mission she fulfilled!
Lucia's Loneliness
After the deaths of Francisco (1919) and Jacinta (1920), Lucia was alone.
It was difficult! Her best friends had departed! The only people who truly understood what she had experienced were in Heaven!
Lucia continued to be constantly questioned: "What did Our Lady say?" "Why don't you reveal the secrets?"
Some believed her. Others doubted. Some even persecuted her!
But Lucia kept her faith. She continued praying. She continued making sacrifices. She continued loving God!
In 1921, when Lucia was 14 years old, the Bishop decided it would be better for her to leave Aljustrel.
Why? The attention was too much! Crowds came to see her! She had no peace to grow normally!
Lucia was sent to a boarding school in Vilar, run by the Dorothean Sisters.
It was painful to leave her family and village. But Lucia obeyed!
At school, Lucia didn't tell anyone who she was! She lived as an ordinary student, without drawing attention!
She studied, worked, prayed. She lived a simple and humble life!
Religious Vocation
In 1925, at 18 years old, Lucia entered the Congregation of the Dorothean Sisters as a novice.
She became Sister Mary Lucia of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart!
But even in the convent, Lucia initially didn't reveal who she was! She lived as an ordinary nun, working, praying, serving!
It was only years later that her superiors discovered: "You are the seer of Fatima!"
Lucia responded humbly: "I am just a useless servant doing what God commands!"
The Apparitions Continue
During her life in the convent, Our Lady continued appearing to Lucia!
On December 10, 1925, Our Lady appeared with the Child Jesus! She showed Her Heart surrounded by thorns!
Our Lady said:
This was the origin of the devotion of the Five First Saturdays!
In 1929, Lucia had an extraordinary vision of the Holy Trinity!
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit appeared! It was a profound mystical experience!
During this vision, Our Lady asked again: "The moment has come when God asks the Holy Father to make the consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart!"
Lucia began writing letters to Popes, transmitting this urgent request!
Writing the Message
By order of her superiors and bishops, Lucia began writing her memoirs.
She wrote in detail about the apparitions. About the secrets. About Francisco and Jacinta.
These writings became fundamental documents! They preserved all the details of Fatima!
Lucia also wrote the third secret on a sealed paper. It was sent to the Vatican and locked in the secret archives!
For decades, this secret remained unknown. The whole world wanted to know what it said!
(It was revealed only in the year 2000 by Pope John Paul II!)
In Carmel
In 1948, Lucia transferred to the Carmel of Coimbra - the same order as Saint Thérèse!
She became Sister Mary Lucia of the Immaculate Heart (Carmelite name)!
In Carmel, she lived a life of strict enclosure. She was rarely seen. She rarely spoke with visitors.
Lucia lived hidden from the world, entirely dedicated to prayer and contemplation!
But from her silent cell, her prayers reached the entire world!
Meetings with Popes
Several Popes wanted to meet Lucia!
Pope Pius XII (1939-1958): Lucia wrote several letters to him about Fatima.
Pope Paul VI (1963-1978): Visited Fatima in 1967 and spoke with Lucia!
Pope John Paul II (1978-2005): Had special devotion to Fatima! Visited three times! Met with Lucia and spoke at length about the message!
John Paul II attributed his survival from the 1981 assassination attempt to Our Lady of Fatima! He made the consecration of Russia in 1984, finally fulfilling the request!
Lucia confirmed: "Our Lady's request was fulfilled!"
Pope Benedict XVI (2005-2013): Also visited Fatima and Lucia!
Lucia lived to see four Popes! She witnessed extraordinary world events:
- Two World Wars
- The expansion and fall of communism
- The consecration of Russia
- The beatification of Francisco and Jacinta
- The revelation of the third secret
Everything as Our Lady had predicted!
Life of Prayer
During her 57 years in Carmel, Lucia lived a life of intense prayer!
She woke at 5 AM. She prayed the Liturgy of the Hours. She participated in daily Mass. She prayed the rosary (often more than one per day!).
She made sacrifices. She fasted. She offered everything for the conversion of sinners and for the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary!
Lucia rarely spoke. She lived in deep silence. But her silence was eloquent - it was constant prayer!
She said: "Prayer and sacrifice - these are the means Our Lady gave us! Let's use them!"
Lucia's Death
Lucia lived to a very advanced age.
In her last years, she became fragile. But she maintained her lucidity and continued praying!
On February 13, 2005, at 97 years old, Sister Lucia died peacefully in the Carmel of Coimbra.
She had fulfilled her mission! She had spread the message of Fatima throughout the entire world!
Her funeral gathered thousands of people! Cardinals, bishops, faithful from around the world came to honor her!
Lucia was buried next to Francisco and Jacinta at the Shrine of Fatima!
The three shepherd children finally reunited!
Lucia's Legacy
Lucia was the last living witness of the apparitions. When she died in 2005, no eyewitness remained!
But thanks to Lucia, the message was perfectly preserved!
Lucia teaches us:
Heroic obedience: She obeyed perfectly the Church and her superiors, even when difficult!
Deep humility: Even being famous, she lived hidden, without seeking attention!
Fidelity to mission: For 88 years (from 1917 to 2005), she faithfully guarded and spread the message!
Life of prayer: Constant prayer was the center of her life!
Love for the Immaculate Heart: Lucia deeply loved Our Lady and promoted devotion to Her!
The Message Continues
Today, more than 100 years after the apparitions, the message of Fatima remains urgent!
Thanks to Lucia's efforts, we know:
- The three secrets
- Devotion to the Five First Saturdays
- Consecration to the Immaculate Heart
- The importance of the daily rosary
- The need for prayer and sacrifice
Millions visit Fatima every year! The message has spread throughout the entire world!
And all because a little 10-year-old shepherd girl said "yes" to Our Lady and remained faithful for 97 years!
