The Avignon Captivity
In Catherine's time, there was a terrible crisis in the Church!
The Pope wasn't in Rome!
He was in Avignon, France!
Why? In 1309, Pope Clement V moved to Avignon!
They said Rome was dangerous! Full of conflicts!
But they spent 70 years in Avignon!
Seven consecutive popes! All in Avignon! Not in Rome!
This caused enormous scandal!
Rome was Saint Peter's see! Heart of Christendom!
The Pope should be there!
Many said: "The popes are prisoners of the French!"
"Avignon is luxurious! Corrupt! Worldly!"
The Church suffered! There were divisions! Confusion! Corruption!
And Catherine - a 28-year-old laywoman - decided to do something!
The Letters to the Pope
Catherine began writing letters to Pope Gregory XI!
Bold letters! Direct! Without beating around the bush!
"Holy Father, return to Rome! It's your place!"
"Leave Avignon! Leave luxury! Return to simplicity!"
"Be courageous! Don't be afraid!"
"Make reforms! Correct abuses! Purify the Church!"
Imagine: a laywoman, without formal education, writing like this to the Pope!
Many were shocked!
"How dare she?"
"Who does she think she is?"
But Catherine didn't care!
She didn't seek her own glory! She sought God's glory and the Church's good!
She said: "If I keep silent out of fear, I betray the truth!"
"I speak because God tells me to speak!"
1376: The Meeting with the Pope
In 1376, something extraordinary happened!
Pope Gregory XI called Catherine to Avignon!
He wanted to meet her personally!
Catherine traveled! With several disciples!
It was her first time leaving Italy!
She arrived in Avignon! At the luxurious papal palace!
The meeting was impressive!
Catherine - simple woman, Dominican laywoman!
The Pope - leader of Christendom, surrounded by cardinals and nobles!
Catherine wasn't intimidated!
She knelt! She kissed the Pope's feet!
But then she looked him in the eyes!
And she told truths no one dared to say!
"Holy Father, God revealed to me that you made a secret vow to return to Rome!"
(It was true! The Pope had made a vow! But hadn't told anyone!)
"Fulfill your vow! Return! The Church needs it!"
"Don't be afraid of dangers! God will protect!"
"Reform the Church! Choose holy cardinals! Correct abuses!"
The Pope was impressed!
How did she know about the secret vow? It could only be revelation from God!
September 13, 1376: The Pope Returns to Rome!
After months of prayer and pressure from Catherine, the Pope decided!
On September 13, 1376, he left Avignon!
He embarked for Rome!
Everyone was shocked! "Impossible! But he's doing it!"
The French cardinals protested! "Don't go! It's dangerous!"
But the Pope was decided!
"Catherine is right! God calls me back!"
On January 17, 1377, after 70 years, the Pope entered Rome!
Crowds celebrated! Bells rang! It was a feast!
"The Pope returned! Thanks to God!"
And everyone knew: Catherine had been a fundamental instrument!
A 29-year-old laywoman had done what cardinals and kings couldn't!
She had brought the Pope back to Rome!
The Great Schism
In 1378, Pope Gregory XI died!

French cardinals didn't accept it!
They elected another pope in Avignon: Clement VII!
Now there were two popes! One in Rome! One in Avignon!
It was the Western Schism!

Catherine suffered immensely!

She defended Urban VI (who was in Rome) as the legitimate Pope!
But she also criticized his errors!

During this turbulent period, Catherine wrote an extraordinary work!
"The Dialogue" (or "Book of Divine Providence")!
It was a dialogue between her and God the Father!
Catherine dictated! Secretaries wrote!
(She had learned to write by herself miraculously at age 30!)

1380: Rome - Final Months
In November 1379, Catherine moved to Rome!
At the request of Pope Urban VI!
To work for Church unity!
But she was exhausted! Sick! Weak!
Years of fasting! Work! Travel! Suffering!
Her body was destroyed!
But she continued working! Praying! Writing!
In January 1380, Catherine had a collapse!
She was praying in St. Peter's Basilica!
Suddenly, she felt an enormous weight! As if the entire church fell on her!
It was a mystical vision! Catherine was carrying the weight of the Church!
She fainted! They took her home!
She was partially paralyzed! She could no longer walk!
In her final months, Catherine suffered tremendously!
Terrible pain! She couldn't eat! Only drink water!
(She had already been fasting supernaturally for years!)
But she didn't complain! She offered everything!
"I want to suffer for the Church! For sinners! For the Pope!"
"I give my life! If my death brings peace to the Church, I accept!"
April 29, 1380: Death
On April 29, 1380, Catherine was dying!
She was only 33 years old!
(Same age as Jesus when He died!)
She was surrounded by disciples! Spiritual friends!
She asked forgiveness for her faults!
She blessed everyone! She gave final advice!
Her last words were:
"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit!"
(Exactly like Jesus!)
And also:
"Blood! Blood! Blood!"
(Referring to Christ's Blood that saves!)
At 12 noon (the sixth hour - when Jesus died!), Catherine died peacefully!
She was 33 years old! She lived briefly! But intensely!
Something extraordinary happened after death!
The stigmata, which were invisible in life, became visible!
Everyone saw the marks on hands, feet and side!
It was final proof! Catherine had truly received Christ's stigmata!
And the body! It didn't decompose! It remained incorrupt!
It exuded a sweet perfume!
The Funeral
The funeral was enormous!
All of Rome cried!
"The saint died!" "Our mother is gone!"
But they also celebrated: "We have a powerful intercessor!"
The body was buried in Rome!
Later, it was transferred to the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva!
There it remains to this day! In a beautiful reliquary!
1461: Canonization
In 1461, 81 years after death, Pope Pius II canonized Catherine!
Saint Catherine of Siena!
It was an enormous celebration!
Siena and Rome celebrated!
The laywoman who changed the Church was now officially a saint!
1939: Patroness of Italy
In 1939, Pope Pius XII declared Saint Catherine Patroness of Italy!
Along with Saint Francis of Assisi!
It was extraordinary recognition!
Catherine who worked so much for peace in Italy!
Now she was the nation's patroness!
1970: Doctor of the Church!
On October 4, 1970, something extraordinary happened!
Pope Paul VI declared Saint Catherine Doctor of the Church!
She was the first woman to receive this title!

Doctor of the Church means: her teachings are so important that the whole Church should study them!
It was incredible recognition!
