Father Karol Wojtyla was no ordinary priest!
He was only 28 years old when he arrived at St. Florian's Parish in Krakow in 1949.
And there, he began an extraordinary ministry with young people!
University students were fascinated by him! He was young, intelligent, athletic, joyful!
Father Karol understood them! He spoke their language! But he also challenged them to holiness!
And thus was born a movement that would change Poland...
The Mountain Priest
Father Karol had a unique method of evangelization: adventure!
He took young people camping in the Tatra Mountains! To ski! To canoe on the lakes!
They called these trips Środowisko (the Environment) - a group of friends united by faith and adventure!
Father Karol walked with them for hours discussing philosophy, theology, life, love, vocation!
He celebrated Mass outdoors, with the mountains as cathedral!
He sat around the campfire singing and praying the rosary!
Young people loved him! But he wasn't seeking popularity - he sought their holiness!
Father Karol was demanding! He challenged them to chastity, daily prayer, frequent confession!
He said: "You were not made for mediocrity! You were made for greatness!"
Many of these young people became priests, nuns, or holy lay people!
They testified: "Father Karol changed our lives! He showed us that holiness is possible and joyful!"
The University Professor
While working as a priest, Karol continued studying!
He earned a second doctorate - this time in philosophy! His thesis was on phenomenology and ethics!
In 1954, at age 34, he began teaching ethics at the Catholic University of Lublin.
Professor Wojtyla was extraordinary! His classes were highly sought after!
He didn't just teach philosophy - he taught how to live! How to love! How to be fully human!
He wrote academic books and articles. He participated in international conferences!
The Youngest Bishop
In 1958, Pope Pius XII appointed Karol Wojtyla Auxiliary Bishop of Krakow!
Karol was only 38 years old - he was the youngest bishop in Poland!
Many were surprised! Who was this young professor?
But Archbishop Sapieha (now Cardinal) knew: Karol was holy and brilliant! He was exactly what the Church in Communist Poland needed!
Karol was consecrated bishop on September 28, 1958, at Wawel Cathedral.
His episcopal motto: Totus Tuus - "Totally Yours" (dedicated to Our Lady)!
As bishop, Karol didn't change! He remained simple, accessible, close to the people!
He visited remote parishes. He confirmed children. He ordained priests. He consoled the afflicted!
But he also confronted the Communist regime!
The Communists tried to suffocate the Church: they closed churches, arrested priests, prohibited catechesis!
Bishop Karol fought - but with different weapons! With truth! With courage! With love!
He told the Communists: "You can persecute us, but you cannot destroy the truth!"
The Second Vatican Council
In 1962, Pope John XXIII convoked the Second Vatican Council - the largest gathering of bishops of the century!
Bishop Karol participated in all four sessions (1962-1965)!
He contributed especially to the document on the Church in the modern world (Gaudium et Spes)!
Karol defended that the Church should dialogue with the world, but without losing its identity!
It should proclaim the Gospel clearly, but with love and respect!
The other bishops were impressed with Bishop Karol's intelligence and holiness!
Archbishop and Cardinal
In 1964, Bishop Karol was appointed Archbishop of Krakow!
Now he was the leader of the Church in Poland's second largest city!
He assumed with humility but also with determination! Krakow would be an example of living faith!
Three years later, in 1967, Pope Paul VI named him Cardinal!
Cardinal Wojtyla was one of the leaders of the world Church! He participated in important decisions! He traveled to Rome frequently!
But he remained simple! He lived modestly! He ate with the poor! He prayed for hours each day!
The Struggle for the Church in Poland
As Archbishop, Cardinal Wojtyla fought for the construction of new churches.
The Communists prohibited it! "We don't need churches! The people need factories!"
But Karol was persistent! He argued, negotiated, pressured!
The most famous struggle was for the Church of the Lord's Ark in Nowa Huta - a workers' city without any church!
For years, Karol fought! He celebrated Masses outdoors! He faced the police! He never gave up!
Finally, in 1977, the church was completed! It was an extraordinary victory!
The Cardinal consecrated the church personally! People cried with joy!
1978: The Year of Three Popes
In August 1978, Pope Paul VI died after 15 years of pontificate.
The Conclave elected Cardinal Albino Luciani, who took the name John Paul I.
Everyone loved the new Pope! He was simple, joyful, humble!
But tragically, only 33 days later, John Paul I died of a heart attack!
It was a worldwide shock! Two Popes in two months!
The Cardinals had to meet again in Conclave...
The October Conclave
On October 14, 1978, 111 Cardinals entered the Sistine Chapel.
They had a mission: elect the 264th Pope!
Cardinal Wojtyla was there. But he didn't expect to be elected! He was young (58 years) and Polish!
All Popes for the last 455 years were Italian! No one imagined a foreign Pope!
The voting began. First day: no clear majority.
Second day: the votes converged toward... Karol Wojtyla!
The Cardinals realized: this man is holy! He's brilliant! He's courageous! He's what the Church needs!
"Habemus Papam!"
On October 16, 1978, at 6:15 PM, white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel!
There was a new Pope!
The crowd in St. Peter's Square exploded with joy! 200,000 people waited anxiously!
Cardinal Pericle Felici appeared on the balcony and announced:
("I announce to you a great joy: We have a Pope! Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, who has taken the name John Paul II!")
There was confusion! "Wojtyla? Who's that?" "He's Polish!" "The first non-Italian Pope in almost 500 years!"
But when John Paul II appeared on the balcony, everyone understood: this man was different!
The First Words
John Paul II took the microphone. He was visibly emotional, but also radiant!
He spoke in Italian (still with a Polish accent!):
Most Eminent Cardinals have called me from a distant country... distant but always very close through communion in faith and Christian tradition!
I was afraid to receive this nomination, but I did so in a spirit of obedience to Our Lord and with total confidence in His Mother, the Most Holy Virgin!
I don't know if I can explain myself well in your... in OUR Italian language! If I make mistakes, you will correct me!"
The crowd exploded in laughter and applause! This Pope was human! He was likeable! He was joyful!
John Paul II continued:
People were enchanted!
"This Pope speaks from the heart!" "He's different!" "You can see that he loves people!"
In Poland, the joy was indescribable! Millions cried with happiness!
A Polish Pope! Under Communist regime! It was practically a miracle!
Karol Wojtyla, the orphan boy from Wadowice, the quarry worker, the clandestine seminary student...
Was now John Paul II, the 264th Pope of the Catholic Church!
And the world would never be the same!
