In May 1941, Father Maximilian Kolbe arrived at hell on Earth: Auschwitz!
Nazi concentration camp in Poland!
Place of death, torture, absolute despair!
The Nazis killed more than 1 million people there!
Mainly Jews! But also Poles, gypsies, political prisoners, priests!
Father Maximilian knew: few would leave there alive!
But he wasn't afraid! He trusted in Mary!
Prisoner 16670
At the entrance to Auschwitz, they stripped Father Maximilian of everything!
They took his Franciscan habit!
They gave him a striped prisoner uniform!
They tattooed a number on his arm: 16670!
From then on, he was no longer "Father Maximilian"!
He was just "16670"!
The Nazis wanted to destroy identity! Dignity! Humanity!
But Father Maximilian didn't lose his identity!
He continued being a priest! Son of Mary! Servant of God!
The number on his arm didn't change his heart!
He was still Maximilian Mary Kolbe - Knight of the Immaculata!
Life in the Camp
Life in Auschwitz was hell!
They woke at 4:30 AM!
Very heavy forced labor! From 6 AM until night!
They carried enormous stones! They built! They dug!
If they stopped for a second: whipping! Punches! Kicks!
Food? A tiny bowl of watery soup and piece of hard bread!
They were living skeletons! Starving! Exhausted! Sick!
The Nazi guards were cruel!
Especially with priests and Jews!
They humiliated! They beat! They killed for fun!
When they discovered someone was a priest, it got worse!
"Priest? Where is your God now? Why doesn't He save you?"
They forced priests to heavier work!
They beat them more!
They wanted them to renounce the faith!
The Priest Among the Prisoners
But Father Maximilian didn't let himself be broken!
He continued being a priest! Even without cassock! Even with tattooed number!
He consoled other prisoners!
He shared his tiny ration of food with the weakest!
(Even though he himself was starving!)
He heard confessions in hiding!
He prayed with others! He gave courage! Hope!
Prisoners testified:
"Father Maximilian was like an angel among us!"
"When he was near, hope returned!"
"He shared his bread with us! Even dying of hunger!"
"I never saw him complain! Always calm! Always praying!"
"He spoke of Mary! Of Jesus! Of Heaven! And we forgot the hell around us!"
End of July 1941: The Escape
At the end of July 1941, something terrible happened!
A prisoner managed to escape from Block 14 (barracks where Father Maximilian was)!
The Nazis had a brutal rule:
If someone escaped, 10 prisoners from the same block would be killed!
To discourage escapes!
It was total injustice! Punishing the innocent!
But Nazis had no mercy!
The Selection for Death
The guards ordered: "Everyone from Block 14, formation!"
Hundreds of prisoners lined up!
Terrified! They knew what was coming!
Commander Karl Fritzsch walked down the line!
He looked at each one! Choosing who would die!
"You! You! You!" he kept pointing!
Ten men! Ten innocent! Would be killed to "teach a lesson"!
"My poor wife! My poor children!"
Among those chosen was Franciszek Gajowniczek!
He was a Polish sergeant! Prisoner of war!
When he was chosen, he cried out in despair:
"My poor wife! My poor children!"
He knew he would never see them again!
His family would lose husband and father!
It was total despair!
"I Am a Catholic Priest"
Suddenly, something extraordinary happened!
A prisoner stepped out of line!
(Stepping out of line meant instant death! Guards shot immediately!)
But this prisoner walked calmly toward the commander!
It was Father Maximilian Kolbe - prisoner 16670!
The guards were astonished! They didn't shoot! They froze!
Father Maximilian stopped before Commander Fritzsch!
Fritzsch asked furiously: "What do you want?"
Father Maximilian, calmly, pointed to Gajowniczek!
"I want to take his place!"
Fritzsch was confused! "Why?"
Father Maximilian: "He has a wife and children! I have no one! I am a Catholic priest!"
Total silence! No one breathed!
This had never happened in Auschwitz!
Someone offering to die in place of another?
Fritzsch looked at Father Maximilian!
He saw a 47-year-old man! Thin! Sick!
He thought: "This one will die soon anyway!"
And at Gajowniczek: strong man! Worker!
He decided coldly: "Accepted! You (pointing at Maximilian) take his place!"
"You (pointing at Gajowniczek) back in line!"
Gajowniczek never forgot that moment!
Decades later, he testified:
"I looked at him! Our eyes met!"
"I saw in them only peace! Calm! Love!"
"He smiled slightly at me!"
"As if saying: 'It's okay! Don't worry!'"
"I'll never fully understand why he did this for me!"
"But I know he saved me! And saved my family!"
The Starvation Bunker
The ten condemned (now including Father Maximilian) were taken to the basement!
To Bunker 11 - the "starvation bunker"!
They were tiny cells! No windows! No food! No water!
The Nazis locked them there! Left them to die of hunger and thirst!
Horrible death! Slow! Agonizing!
Normally it took 2-3 weeks of torture!
Prisoners went mad! They screamed! They fought each other for water!
But with Father Maximilian, something different happened!
Normally from the bunker came screams! Cries! Curses! Despair!
But this time, the guards heard... singing!
"What is this?" they asked surprised.
It was the ten prisoners! Singing hymns! Praying!
Father Maximilian was leading them in prayer!
Bruno Borgowiec, prisoner who worked in the bunker, testified:
"It was extraordinary!"
"Instead of despair, there was peace!"
"Father Maximilian prayed with them! They sang hymns to Mary!"
"You could hear the rosary! Songs! Prayers!"
"Father Maximilian was preparing them for death!"
"He transformed a bunker of despair into a chapel of prayer!"
"I'd never seen anything like it!"
Days passed! The prisoners died one by one!
From hunger! From thirst! From exhaustion!
Father Maximilian heard last confessions!
He gave absolution! He comforted!
"We're going to Heaven! To Mary! To Jesus!"
"Don't fear! God is with us!"
Each day, the voices diminished!
But Father Maximilian's voice was always heard! Praying! Singing!
August 14, 1941: The Lethal Injection
After two weeks, on August 14 (eve of Mary's Assumption!), only four were still alive!
Among them, Father Maximilian!
Even after 14 days without food or water, he was still conscious!
Weak! Skeletal! But conscious! Praying!
The Nazis were irritated!
"We need this cell! Finish them off!"
They called a Nazi doctor!
They gave him an order: "Kill them with injections!"
The doctor entered the bunker!
He brought a syringe with carbolic acid (deadly poison)!
He applied it to the first three! They died quickly!
Finally, he approached Father Maximilian!
Father Maximilian was sitting! Leaning against the wall!
Serene! Looking upward! Praying!
Father Maximilian voluntarily extended his arm!
As if saying: "I'm ready! You may apply it!"
He wasn't afraid! He didn't hesitate!
He accepted death with total peace!
The doctor applied the injection!
Father Maximilian continued praying!
He looked upward! As if seeing something glorious!
He murmured something (witnesses say it was Mary's name!)
And he died peacefully!
It was August 14, 1941! Vigil of the Assumption!
Father Maximilian was 47 years old!
Bruno Borgowiec, who was present, testified:
"His face was radiant!"
"There was extraordinary peace!"
"He seemed in ecstasy!"
"He didn't die as a desperate victim!"
"He died as a saint going to meet God!"
The Body Cremated
The Nazis burned Father Maximilian's body!
(They burned all bodies in Auschwitz)
Nothing remained physically!
But his memory! His example! His testimony!
These could never be burned!
Gajowniczek survived! He told the story to the world!
Other prisoners who witnessed also survived!
And the world learned of the heroic sacrifice!
Franciszek Gajowniczek - The Saved Man
Gajowniczek survived Auschwitz!
He was liberated in 1945!
He returned home! He reunited with wife and children!
(Exactly what Father Maximilian wanted to save!)
He lived until 1995 - 93 years!
He had decades of life! He saw his children grow! He knew grandchildren!
All because Father Maximilian died for him!
Gajowniczek spent the rest of his life testifying!
He told the story thousands of times!
"Father Maximilian saved me!"
"Not just physically! Spiritually too!"
"He showed me that love can overcome hate!"
"That good can overcome evil!"
"That Christ truly lives in His saints!"
Gajowniczek was present at Father Maximilian's beatification and canonization!
October 17, 1971: Beatification
In 1971, 30 years after martyrdom, Pope Paul VI beatified Father Maximilian!
But as confessor, not as martyr!
Why? Because technically he wasn't killed out of hatred for the faith!
He was killed for substituting another prisoner!
So he was beatified for heroic charity!
Blessed Maximilian Kolbe, Confessor of the Faith!
October 10, 1982: Canonization as Martyr!
In 1982, something extraordinary!
Pope John Paul II (Polish like Maximilian!) studied the case!
He declared: "Maximilian was indeed a martyr!"
"He was killed out of hatred for the Catholic faith and priesthood!"
"The Nazis killed him because he was a priest!"
"And he died for love - the greatest act of faith!"
So on October 10, 1982, he canonized him as MARTYR!
Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe, Martyr of Charity!
The canonization was extraordinary!
150,000 people in St. Peter's!
Franciszek Gajowniczek was present!
At 81 years old! He cried with joy!
"The man who saved me is now a saint!"
Pope John Paul II said memorable words:
"Saint Maximilian didn't die! He gave his life!"
"There's a difference! Death is passive! Giving life is active!"
"He freely chose to die for another!"
"This is maximum love!"
The Legacy of Saint Maximilian Kolbe
Saint Maximilian leaves us a precious legacy:

❤️ Courage before evil - He faced Nazism with love!
Auschwitz Today
Today, Auschwitz is a museum!
Place of memory! Of mourning!
In Bunker 11, in the cell where Father Maximilian died, there's a memorial!
Candles! Flowers! Prayers!
Millions visit annually!
They learn about the horror of the Holocaust!
But they also learn about Saint Maximilian's heroism!
That even in the worst evil, good can triumph!
The Two Crowns
Remember the vision when Maximilian was 10?
Our Lady with two crowns - white and red?
He chose both!
White crown (purity): He lived a virgin life! Chaste! Pure! Consecrated to Mary!
Red crown (martyrdom): He died a martyr! He gave blood! He gave life!
Our Lady knew from the beginning!
She prepared him from childhood!
And he corresponded perfectly!
Saint Maximilian Today
Saint Maximilian is one of the most beloved saints!
Especially in Poland!
But worldwide!
The Militia of the Immaculata continues! Millions of members!
Niepokalanów still exists! Still publishes!
Churches are dedicated to him!
Schools! Hospitals! Missions!
His name inspires! His example moves!
