In the 3rd century, the Roman Empire persecuted Christians!
It was a crime to be Christian! Punishable by death!
Christians were arrested! Tortured! Killed!
It seemed Christianity would end!
But God raised up brave men and women!
One of them was Sebastian!
The Secret Christian
Sebastian was born in Narbonne (Gaul, today's France)!
But he grew up in Milan (Italy)!
His family was Christian! But secretly!
(Revealing it meant death!)
Sebastian grew up strong! Courageous! Intelligent!
He loved Christ! But he also loved Rome!
He had an idea: "I'm going to be a Roman soldier!"
Everyone was surprised!
"A Christian? A soldier? That's dangerous!"
But Sebastian had a plan!
"If I'm a soldier, I can help imprisoned Christians!"
"I can encourage them! Strengthen them! Prevent them from denying the faith!"
It was a risky plan! But brilliant!
Sebastian enlisted in the Roman army!
The Imperial Guard
Sebastian was an exceptional soldier!
Strong! Brave! Disciplined! Loyal!
He rose through the ranks quickly!
And he achieved the incredible: he entered the Praetorian Guard!
(The emperor's personal guard! Only the best!)
He became captain of the First Cohort!
He had direct access to Emperor Diocletian!
The emperor loved Sebastian!
He trusted him completely!
He never suspected Sebastian was Christian!
And Sebastian? He used his position wisely!
He visited Christian prisoners!
He encouraged them: "Don't give up! Christ is with you!"
He helped them escape when possible!
He brought food, water, comfort!
All in secret!
The Conversions
One day, Sebastian met two Christian brothers: Marcus and Marcelinus!
They were imprisoned! Sentenced to death!
But they were wavering! About to deny the faith to save their lives!
Their family begged them: "Deny Christ! Save your lives!"
Marcus and Marcelinus were almost giving in...
Sebastian arrived at the prison!
He spoke with power and wisdom!
"What profit is there to gain the world and lose your soul?"
"You will die anyway! Everyone dies!"
"But if you deny Christ, you lose eternal life!"
"Be brave! In a few moments of suffering, you'll win eternal glory!"
Marcus and Marcelinus were strengthened!
They decided: "We will not deny Christ! Let's die for Him!"
But something extraordinary happened!
Sebastian's speech was so powerful that it converted many who were present!
The brothers' parents converted!
The prison guard Nicostratus converted!
Nicostratus's wife Zoe converted!
The officer Claudius converted!
The priest Polycarp converted!
More than 16 people converted that day!
The Miracle of Zoe
Zoe, Nicostratus's wife, had a serious problem!
She had been mute for 6 years! She couldn't speak!
(Maybe from an illness or accident)
When she converted to Christ, she wanted to speak!
To praise God! To profess faith!
But she couldn't!
Sebastian prayed for Zoe!
He made the sign of the cross over her mouth!
And the miracle happened!
Zoe began to speak!
Her first words were: "Blessed be Jesus Christ!"
After 6 years of silence, she spoke!
Everyone was amazed!
The miracle confirmed the truth of the Christian faith!
The Denouncement
Sebastian's ministry was very successful!
He converted many Romans!
He strengthened many Christians!
He helped many escape martyrdom!
But eventually, his secret was discovered!
Someone denounced him to the emperor!
"Sebastian is a Christian! He helps the enemies of Rome!"
Before the Emperor
Sebastian was brought before Emperor Diocletian!
The emperor couldn't believe it!
"Sebastian? My faithful captain? A Christian?"
"I trusted you! I promoted you! And you betrayed me?"
Sebastian replied with courage:
"I never betrayed you, Emperor! I always served Rome loyally!"
"But I serve an even greater Lord: Jesus Christ!"
"And I will never deny Him!"
Diocletian was furious!
"You will die a traitor's death!"
"Tie him to a post! Shoot him with arrows until he's dead!"
"Let all see what happens to those who betray Rome!"
Sebastian was taken!
They tied him to a post in the middle of the field!
The best archers were called!
The First Martyrdom
The archers shot!
Dozens of arrows!
Sebastian's body was covered with arrows!
He looked like a porcupine!
Blood ran! Pain was immense!
The archers left, thinking he was dead!
Everyone thought Sebastian had died!
But hours later, a Christian woman named Irene passed by the place!
She was the widow of martyr Saint Castulus!
She wanted to take Sebastian's body for burial!
But when she approached... Sebastian was alive!
Weak! Dying! But alive!
Irene carefully took him to her house!
Irene cared for Sebastian's wounds!
She removed arrows! Cleaned wounds! Applied ointments!
She prayed! She cried! She hoped!
And the miracle happened!
Sebastian recovered completely!
The wounds healed!
He regained his strength!
It was a miracle from God!
Return and Final Martyrdom
What would Sebastian do now?
Hide? Flee? Save his life?
No!
He made a courageous decision: "I'm going back to the emperor!"
"I'm going to confront him! I'm going to profess Christ again!"
Everyone tried to stop him: "It's suicide! The emperor will kill you!"
But Sebastian was determined!
One day, Emperor Diocletian was walking in the palace!
Suddenly, Sebastian appeared before him!
The emperor was terrified!
"A ghost! Sebastian died!"
But Sebastian said: "I'm alive, Emperor! God saved me!"
"And I came to tell you: stop persecuting Christians!"
"The God we serve is the true God!"
"Convert and save your soul!"
Diocletian was furious!
"This time you won't escape!"
"Beat him to death! And throw his body in the sewer!"
"So Christians can't honor him!"
Soldiers grabbed Sebastian!
They beat him with clubs!
This time, Sebastian truly died!
He gave his life for Christ!
It was around the year 288 AD!
The Hidden Body
Soldiers threw Sebastian's body in the Cloaca Maxima (Rome's great sewer)!
They thought Christians wouldn't find it!
But God had other plans!
Sebastian appeared in a dream to a Christian woman named Lucina!
He revealed where his body was!
Lucina went! She found the body! She buried it with honor!
In the catacombs, in a place that would become the Basilica of Saint Sebastian!
The Veneration
The veneration of Saint Sebastian spread quickly!
He became one of the most popular martyrs in the Church!
Why?
First, because of his extraordinary courage!
Second, because of his strategic wisdom!
Third, because of the miracle of surviving arrows!
Fourth, because of his decision to return and confront the emperor!
In the Middle Ages, there was a terrible plague (disease) in Europe!
It killed millions of people!
Christians prayed to Saint Sebastian for protection!
And in many places, the plague stopped!
Since then, Sebastian became patron saint against plagues and epidemics!
When there was plague, people prayed: "Saint Sebastian, protect us!"

In Art
Saint Sebastian is one of the most represented saints in Christian art!
Painters and sculptors love to portray him!
Usually he appears:
- Tied to a post or tree
- Shot with many arrows
- Young, strong, muscular
- Looking toward heaven
- With a serene expression despite pain
Why this fascination?
Because the image symbolizes courage in suffering!
Faith that overcomes pain!
The martyr who doesn't fear death!
Sebastian's Message for Today
What does Saint Sebastian teach us today?
First: Strategic courage! Sebastian didn't reveal he was Christian prematurely! He waited for the right moment! He used his position to do maximum good! This teaches us to be wise! Not to expose ourselves unnecessarily! But also not to be cowards when the time comes to profess faith!
Second: Helping the persecuted! Sebastian risked his life to help imprisoned Christians! Today, there are still persecuted Christians in the world! How can we help? Pray for them! Donate to organizations that help them! Speak up for them!
Third: Converting by example! Sebastian's speech converted more than 16 people! Not only by words, but by his courageous life! Your example can convert others too! How do you live? Does your life attract people to Christ or push them away?
Fourth: Courage to return! After miraculously surviving, Sebastian could have fled! But he returned to confront the emperor! This teaches us: sometimes God saves us so we can continue the mission! Not to accommodate ourselves! When God gives you a second chance, use it for Him!
Fifth: Not fearing death! Sebastian died twice (in a way)! He didn't fear! Because he knew death isn't the end! There's eternal life! Do you fear death? Or do you trust that Christ defeated death?
