On August 15, 1195, in Lisbon, Portugal, a boy named Fernando was born!
His parents were wealthy nobles! They lived in a palace!
Fernando had everything: education, comfort, a bright future!
But God had other plans for him...
This boy would become Saint Anthony of Padua - one of the world's most beloved saints!
The Noble Boy
Fernando grew up in Lisbon, near the Cathedral!
He was an intelligent boy! Studious! Devout!
While other noble boys played with swords, Fernando preferred to pray!
He went to the cathedral every day! He prayed for hours!
"Fernando, come play!" his friends called.
"Later! I need to talk to Jesus first!" he would respond.
At age 15, Fernando made a decision that shocked his family:
"I want to be a friar!" he announced.
His parents were horrified! "No! You are noble! You can have position, wealth, power!"
But Fernando was decided! "The riches of the world don't interest me! I want to serve God!"
He entered the monastery of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine!
He exchanged a palace for a small cell! Banquets for fasts! Luxury for poverty!
The Years of Study
In the monastery, Fernando immersed himself in studies!
He studied the Bible! Theology! Philosophy! Church Fathers!
He had a prodigious memory! He read a book once and memorized it!
He knew the entire Bible by heart!
At 20, he already knew more than his teachers!
He was considered a genius!
But Fernando was humble! He didn't boast!
On the contrary! The more he learned, the more humble he became!
"The more I know, the more I realize I know nothing!" he would say.
He prayed for hours! He fasted! He did penances!
He united wisdom with holiness!
This is rare! Many wise people are proud! Fernando was wise and humble!
The Meeting with the Martyrs
In 1220, when Fernando was 25, something extraordinary happened!
Five Franciscan friars went as missionaries to Morocco (North Africa)!
There, they preached the Gospel to Muslims!
But they were imprisoned! Tortured! And finally martyred - killed for Christ!
Their bodies were brought back to Portugal!
Fernando saw the bodies of the martyrs!
He was deeply touched!
"They were my age! They gave their lives for Christ! And me? What am I doing?"
He began to think: "I'm safe here in the monastery! Studying! Comfortable!"
"But does God want me here? Or does He want me out there, preaching, suffering, maybe dying for Him?"
The seed of martyrdom was planted in his heart!
The Decision to Become Franciscan
Fernando met Franciscan friars who passed through Coimbra!
He was impressed!
They were poor! Joyful! Simple! They lived the Gospel literally!
Saint Francis of Assisi had founded the order just a few years before!
It was a new movement! Revolutionary! Radical!
Fernando felt: "This is what I want! Total poverty! To follow Jesus completely!"
In 1220, at age 25, Fernando made an extraordinary decision!
He left the Augustinians! He joined the Franciscans!
He received a new name: Friar Anthony!
(Why Anthony? Out of devotion to Saint Anthony the Great, the hermit!)
And he immediately asked: "I want to go to Morocco! I want to preach! I want to be a martyr like those five!"
The superiors accepted! Friar Anthony left for Morocco!
The Frustrated Mission
Friar Anthony arrived in Morocco full of zeal!
"I'm going to preach! I'm going to convert Muslims! I'm going to die a martyr!"
But as soon as he got there, he became seriously ill!
Very high fever! Weakness! He couldn't even stand!
The friars took care of him, but he didn't improve!
Finally they decided: "You need to return to Portugal! Recover your health!"
Friar Anthony was devastated!
"I came to be a martyr! But I can't even preach! What a failure!"
He boarded back, sad, disappointed!
But he didn't know: God had different plans!
Sometimes we think we've failed, but God is guiding us to something greater!
Anthony's "failure" was actually preparation for an extraordinary ministry!
The Storm
During the return voyage, a terrible storm happened!
The ship was diverted! It lost its course!
Instead of arriving in Portugal, it arrived in Sicily (Italy)!
Friar Anthony got off the ship completely lost!
"Where am I? What to do? Where to go?"
He knew no one! He had no money! He was sick!
But he trusted in God!
The Hidden Life
Friar Anthony joined the Franciscans in a small convent in Italy!
He asked for simple work: "I can cook! Clean! Wash dishes!"
No one knew he was a genius! He knew the Bible by heart! He was a potential preacher!
He didn't tell! He remained humble! Hidden!
He spent months like this! Working! Praying! Serving!
He was happy in obscurity!
The Discovery of the Gift
In 1222, there was a priestly ordination in Forli!
Many Franciscans and Dominicans were present!
They planned to have a sermon! But at the last minute, the designated preacher couldn't!
"Who will preach?" they asked worried.
No one was prepared! Everyone hesitated!
They looked at Friar Anthony: "You! Preach something!"
Friar Anthony hesitated! "Me? But I'm not prepared!"
"Doesn't matter! Speak what the Holy Spirit inspires!"
So Friar Anthony went up to the pulpit!
He began to speak! And...
It was extraordinary!
The words flowed! He quoted the Bible from memory! He explained deeply!
He moved hearts! Everyone cried! They converted!
After the sermon, everyone was shocked!
"Who is this friar? He's a genius! He's inspired by God!"
The superior asked: "Friar Anthony, where did you learn all this?"
Anthony responded humbly: "I studied a little before being a Franciscan..."
"A little? You are one of the greatest scholars I've ever seen!"
The news spread rapidly! The humble friar who cooked was actually an extraordinary sage!
The Itinerant Preacher
After this discovery, Saint Francis of Assisi (who was still alive!) heard about Friar Anthony!
He wrote him a letter: "Friar Anthony, you have an extraordinary gift! Use it to preach!"
"But one condition: that preaching doesn't kill the spirit of prayer and humility!"
Friar Anthony obeyed!
He began to preach throughout Italy!
Friar Anthony traveled on foot! From city to city!
He preached in squares! Churches! Streets!
Thousands came to hear him!
His preaching was fire!
He explained the Bible clearly! He denounced sins! He called to conversion!
But he did everything with love! He didn't condemn! He elevated!
The Sermon to the Fish
One day, in Rimini, Friar Anthony went to preach!
But the heretics (who denied truths of the faith) closed the church doors!
"We don't want to hear you!" they shouted.
Friar Anthony wasn't offended!
He went to the beach! And began to preach... to the fish!
"Since men don't want to hear God's Word, you, fish, will hear it!"
And then an extraordinary miracle happened!
The fish began to appear!
They came out of the water! They put their heads out!
They stayed quiet! Attentive! As if listening!
Small fish in front! Medium in the middle! Large in back!
Perfectly organized! Hearing the sermon!
The crowd in the city saw! They were astonished!
People began to run to the beach!
"It's a miracle! It's a miracle! Even the fish obey him!"
The heretics were ashamed!
"If the fish hear God's Word, we should too!"
Many converted that day!
The sermon to the fish became one of Saint Anthony's most famous episodes!
Fighting Heretics
Friar Anthony became a specialist in combating heresies!
At the time, there was a group called Cathars (or Albigensians)!
They denied fundamental truths! They said matter is evil! That Jesus didn't really become man!
They caused confusion! They deceived the faithful!
Friar Anthony faced them with wisdom!
He didn't use violence! He didn't insult! He didn't condemn!
He used reason! Bible! Love!
He explained patiently! He answered objections! He showed the truth!
Many heretics converted through him!
They said: "We can't answer him! He knows too much! And he speaks with such love!"
Friar Anthony proved: truth wins when told with charity!
Fame Grows
Friar Anthony's fame spread throughout Europe!
"There's a Portuguese Franciscan who preaches like no one else!"
"He works miracles! He converts heretics! He moves crowds!"
Entire cities stopped when he arrived!
They rang bells! Everyone ran to hear him!
Sometimes he preached to 30,000 people outdoors!
(In that time without microphones! But God miraculously amplified his voice!)
But fame didn't change him!
He remained humble! Poor! Simple!
He slept on the floor! He ate little! He prayed for hours!
He wore the same old, patched habit!
When they praised him, he said: "It's not me! It's the Holy Spirit!"
He remained the same Friar Anthony who washed dishes in hiding!
